Many Waters is the title of the colorful art form that hangs on the North wall of the recreational pool at the Aquatic Center.

The colorful life saver sculptures caught my eye on my first visit to the pool. I didn’t realize then that the aquatic therapy would be my own personal life support. I had been referred to the complex by my rheumatologist after a painful summer of doctors’ visits, X-rays and other diagnostic tests.

My first therapist encouraged me in the water routine which strengthened muscles. I continued with my aquatic routine following hip surgery and four years later still follow a healing and soothing workout on land and in the water.

I have benefited both physically and emotionally from the dedicated encouragement of the staff. Personnel from the exercise room, the pool, locker room and reception area have always been pleasant. On occasion, I have succumbed to the feeling that I am awash in chronic aches and pains, but the staff reflects the philosophy behind the wall sculpture – the water and the hands that help truly remain a life saver.

I came to the Lewis Aquatic Center as a really depressed, weakened, inactive 83 year old lady, having lost my beloved husband of 57 years. In addition, I had become inactive, dependent and experienced frequent vertigo and loss of balance with unsteady gait. I stopped cooking, shopping and entertaining and slept more and more hours.

When my physician and my daughter, who is a nurse executive, recommended treatment at the Lewis Aquatic Center, I resisted but then began to come to each and every appointment with my excellent, compassionate and gentle physical therapist, who brought me back to my old self with encouragement, patience and persistent hard work. He made me realize that I needed to be committed to life and to myself again to make progress. He taught me that one is never too old to strive for quality of life and that physical therapy does restore your balance, strength and well being. God bless the Lewis Aquatic Center.
