Peter B. Lewis Center means opportunity. When my husband, Herb Kleiman, suffered a massive stroke in July, 2001, he could easily have entered a nursing home permanently. The question was how much capability Herb might eventually regain. Pessimism among the specialists was rampant.
During the initial year following discharge we traveled across the city three times each week to an outpatient rehabilitation facility. In July, 2002 we transferred to Peter B. Lewis for physical and aquatic therapy. Therapists encouraged Herb to perform exercises in and out of water to strengthen his right side. I stood nearby and watched. I vividly remember watching him do deep knee bends in the small pool on his paralyzed leg and realized then how much more he could accomplish.
When Herb graduated from his therapies, he moved to the Fitness and Wellness Center where our therapist trained us to use the special equipment independently. We have enjoyed the camaraderie we’ve experienced with the supervisor and other participants. It is difficult to remain reserved and preoccupied when others are so warm and welcoming.
Recovery is slow but steady as Herb works to regain his strength and balance. He has made significant advancement and still has even further to go.
We are both deeply grateful to the proximity and continuing opportunity offered by Peter B. Lewis. Its cluster of programs and the wonderful support, talent, and encouragement of its outstanding staff are much appreciated.

I have been in a wheelchair for 13 years. I was moved by a lift from the bed to a chair. Bedpans and bed baths were routine. My legs were useless.
As a last hope in July, 2003, I started water therapy at the Peter B. Lewis Aquatic & Therapy Center. A miracle happened! Today, 20 months later, I walked over 650 feet. Isn’t this wonderful!
